AUTUMN SMOKE: SAME SIZE FRAMED AS ABOVE PIECE

The above mosaic, Autumn Smoke, was inspired by this snapshot of an unknown woman cooking on a grill. Needless to say, I didn't imitate her hair or expression, but there was something about it that struck me, thus the figure was born. On looking at the snapshot again, I see there is a sense of "smoke" on the left side. When I worked on the composition and colors to use in the piece, I felt that the addition of the smoke was something unexpected and important. Interesting.... the art process.

Debora is an ancestor of mine who lived in the hudson River Valley in the 1500's. She was the wife of my
great great great... grandfather Claes van Schoonhoven, but ran off with another man. There are records of
this event and somehow Debora fascinates me.
